“You’ve never seen Midsummer like this” – Forget everything you think you know about Shakespeare
Hunter Drama’s Performance Troupe returns in May with a vibrant and unexpected take on William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream – a production that promises to sweep audiences into a world of magic, mischief, and theatrical invention. Fast, funny and fueled by a fearless cast of young performers, it follows the success of last year’s The Tempest.
Director Dan Stranger is once again diving into Shakespeare, drawn to the playwright’s rich storytelling and the unique opportunities his work offers young performers.
“Shakespeare crafts tales with so much to offer – ensemble casts, multiple plotlines, and vast opportunities for movement, comedy, and drama,” says Stranger. “As a teacher, I love watching a new cast break down those initial barriers and realise – ‘wait, we’re allowed to enjoy this?’ That moment never gets old.”
A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a natural next choice. Bursting with colour, creativity, and imagination, Shakespeare’s most enchanting comedy weaves together lovers, fairies, and a troupe of hilariously inept actors in a fast-moving story where anything can happen and usually does.
As night falls on an ancient forest, four young lovers flee the city in search of freedom only to become tangled in a web of love potions, mistaken identities, and mischievous fairies. Meanwhile, a troupe of amateur actors prepares a play so bad it just might be brilliant.
Filled with unforgettable characters, dazzling language, and a healthy dose of chaos, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a whimsical celebration of love in all its wild, ridiculous, and magical forms.
This production, however, is far from traditional.
Rejecting the notion that Shakespeare must feel distant or formal, Hunter Drama’s Midsummer invites audiences into the story through humour, energy, and connection. “Our production is not about frilly collars or putting on a ‘Shakespeare voice’,” says Stranger. “It’s about laughter, emotion, and the human experience.”
Visually, the show leans into a striking conceptual contrast – order versus chaos. Set through an early 20th-century lens, the structured world of Athens gives way to a wild, bohemian forest inspired by a gypsy-carnival aesthetic. The stage transforms into a circus-like environment, complete with flowing fabric and a central performance space, creating an immersive and visually arresting experience.
At the heart of the production is Hunter Drama’s Performance Troupe – a group of bold, dynamic young performers committed to pushing their creative boundaries.
“These are confident, innovative theatre-makers,” Stranger explains. “Tey take initiative, think outside the box, and are driven to bring their imaginations to life. This production gives them the space to grow, create, and shine.”
While Shakespeare’s language can sometimes feel intimidating, Stranger believes Midsummer remains universally accessible. “Shakespeare didn’t write for academics – he wrote for everyone. The story is still clear, the comedy still lands, and the spectacle carries you through. It’s a play for all ages.”
Audiences can expect a high-energy theatrical experience filled with comedy, romance, physicality, and surprise – from slapstick humour and magical transformations to movement, dance, and moments of genuine emotion.
“Our audiences will laugh, wonder, and feel in every moment,” says Stranger. “It’s a wild, captivating ride from start to finish.”
