Revolting Children Rejoice: Matilda JR. Comes to Newcastle
Hunter Drama is set to bring the beloved musical phenomenon Matilda JR. to the stage these July school holidays in a bold, energetic, and heartfelt production celebrating courage, imagination, and the power of young voices.
Playing at Hunter Theatre, Newcastle from July 10–18, 2026, Matilda JR. tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a brilliant little girl with a vivid imagination, a sharp mind, and a mysterious gift. Faced with terrible parents, a terrifying headmistress, and a world that tries to silence her, Matilda discovers that even the smallest person can change their own story.
Based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl, Matilda the Musical has become a global theatrical phenomenon since premiering with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2010. Featuring a celebrated score by Australian comedian and composer Tim Minchin, the award-winning musical has captivated audiences across London’s West End, Broadway, Australia, and beyond, being the recipient of more than 100 international awards and widely recognised as one of the most successful family musicals of the modern era .
Packed with high-energy musical numbers, larger-than-life characters, and moments of genuine heart, the production promises an unforgettable theatrical experience for audiences of all ages in what is sure to be a highlight of the July school holidays.
Featuring an extraordinary cast of 106 young performers, the production will alternate between two full casts: the “Naughty” cast and the “Revolting” cast, bringing even more energy, creativity, and personality to the stage across the season.
Director James Chapman says the show has long been on Hunter Drama’s wish list.
“Matilda JR. has always been a show we’ve wanted to see done at Hunter Drama,” Chapman said.
“It’s one of those rare stories that speaks to both children and adults at the same time. It’s wildly imaginative, funny, and full of heart, but underneath all of that it’s really about courage, rebellion, and finding your voice which is something we could use a lot more of in today’s world.”
Chapman says the creative energy already emerging in rehearsals has been inspiring.
“This production feels bold, playful, and deeply heartfelt all at once. There’s a real sense of collaboration and joy behind it, and I think audiences are going to feel that from the moment the show begins.”
Choreographer Rachel Stark says movement plays a crucial role in bringing the world of Matilda to life.
“The movement style of this production is energetic, expressive and full of personality,” Stark said. “At times it is playful and full of heart, while in other moments it captures the sense of revolt and determination that sits at the centre of the story.”
Musical Director Ali Hodge says the score brings a unique energy into the rehearsal room.
“Tim Minchin’s clever writing captures the imagination of a child just as much as it connects with an adult,” Hodge said. “The fun that runs all the way through the score brings an undeniable electricity into the rehearsal room.”
The creative team have praised the dedication and enthusiasm of the young cast throughout rehearsals.
“Bringing a large cast together takes time, dedication and focus, especially with such wordy and intricate material,” said Hodge. “But I am so proud of the sound these students are making. They are invested in storytelling through their voices, and maintaining diction, harmonies and energy while performing choreography is no small feat but they are absolutely nailing it.”
“The commitment and enthusiasm from the cast has been incredible,” agreed Chapman. “There’s a really strong ensemble spirit developing, which is exactly what a show like Matilda needs.”
Stark added: “The choreography is challenging, yet the students consistently rise to that challenge with determination and positivity. In just a few short weeks, I have already witnessed enormous growth in their confidence, performance quality and teamwork.”
With themes of kindness, resilience, creativity, and standing up for what is right, Matilda JR. promises to be a joyful and empowering celebration of imagination and individuality.
