CARRIE: The Musical

The season of Carrie: The Musical has been so popular that we sold out. To make sure that no-one misses out on seeing this extraordinary production, we’ve added a new performance on Sunday 25 August at 7.30pm. Tickets are selling fast and won’t last.

Recently we asked co-Directors Ali Hodge and Rachel Stark some extra questions about the production.

1. What are some of the main talking points in your interpretation of Carrie? Will it be thought provoking for audiences, do you think?

Cause and effect seems to be a recurring theme throughout the show. The actions that we take, and how they affect others, positively or negatively. There are many moments throughout the show where we have stopped and said to the actors “See there, because of the choice your character has just made, it has created a permission slip for the others”. We would be lying if we said there weren’t moments that will be challenging to watch, but right alongside those are moments of utter joy, fun and connection.

2. I recall the musical score of the movie. How is it being achieved on stage, and by whom?

The score of the musical is definitely a more modern sound, however the soundscape we’re creating to accompany the score will very much aim to reflect the tension created in the film. The mood, the telekinesis, the weather, even down to what sound the school bell or doorbell should make, are all being highly considered and created by the creative team. It’s a really fun area to use our creativity!

3. Were the cast able to inject some of their own experiences and emotions into the performance?

Nobody knows what it’s like to be in high school, like people who are currently in high school – so yes, there is definitely an infusion of their own experiences playing out. We don’t have any interest in asking our young actors to tell us their deepest darkest trauma’s or memories, however we have lots of open discussions about being human, and the human experience. I have started many conversations about the text by saying “You know how when… ” and continue to discuss some of the harder aspects the characters are facing, and it’s usually followed by a knowing nod, or laugh from the cast. These young actors are extremely ‘tapped in’, and bravely allow the vulnerability of what is required to tell all the aspects of the story – the fun, as well as the not as fun!
